Here are some answers to questions you may have about patient care and our experience with treating a variety of health problems.
Treatment – Setting Expectations
Although every patient is different, a typical course of treatment involves the initial assessment to outline your present health status and desired objectives. A course of action is agreed upon and a plan set in motion to address the most pressing issues. The need for follow-up appointments is determined by the severity and acuity of your present health. Typically patients might meet with Dr. Huber 3 to 4 times in the first year of their care but as health improves and goals are met these follow-ups become less frequent, possibly twice a year or less. Along this course, we engage in education to enable you to guide your own personal health with greater results. The ultimate goal is to make you more self-reliant and capable of managing your health with intermittent reassessment by our staff to keep your mind and body operating at optimal levels. Ultimately enhancing longevity while reducing disease risk.
ADD/ADHD
We have experienced great success in treating these types of problems without medication. If medication is needed we are perfectly comfortable and capable of prescribing it but it is seldom needed to accomplish an excellent outcome and never represents the true cause of the problem.
Adrenal Fatigue
Dr. Gary Huber lectures nationally on this very topic and is a thought leader in its approach to treatment. We have a long history of evaluating and treating adrenal issues and understand its role in your long-term health. Chronic stress impacts the brain's signaling of cortisol and our strategy employs evaluation and treatment of the hypothalamus and pituitary function as well as the adrenal gland itself.
Allergies
We employ a very successful program that involves correcting your immune system dysfunction and desensitizing your body’s exaggerated response to allergens. Sub-lingual immune therapy is a great tool for reversing your allergic response and has been employed by physicians for over 60 years.
Food & Environmental Allergies
We use blood analysis to identify both IgE allergens and IgG sensitivities to foods and environmental allergens. If indicated we engage in immune-modulating therapy (without shots) to help reverse your allergens and calm your overactive immune response. We have great experience with the proper nutritional strategies to advance your health while resolving allergy issues.
Asthma: Can you help me with my recurrent asthma episodes?
Asthma is a sign of an over-reactive immune system which most commonly is secondary to undiagnosed food allergies. Traditional treatments focus simply on symptom control and don’t attack the cause. It is quite common to see asthma resolve once proper attention to immune dysfunction is addressed.
Autoimmune Disease
We treat auto-immune disorders, such as Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, eczema, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, and many others. All auto-immune disorders have common physiologic threads that respond well to immune modulation. We work to uncover the source of your immune insult and try to remove the driving factor. Some of the most common factors include heavy metal toxicity, food and environmental triggers, excessive sustained cortisol, and smoldering unrecognized viral infections. The use of biologic drug therapy carries significant risks such as increased cancer and infection risks and our goal is to reduce or eliminate your need for drug treatment.
Bio-Identical Hormones
Dr. Huber takes great joy in sharing his understanding of hormone therapies with anyone who cares to learn. He speaks nationally as a professor for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine on the topic of Bio-Identical hormone replacement and their proper use in promoting health as well as their role in preventing disease. Bio-Identical hormones are made from plant fats and are “identical” in structure to your own natural hormones. They are exact replicas. Traditional hormone replacement therapy using drugs is worlds apart from the benefit of Bio-Identical hormones. See our educational videos to learn more.
Cancer
We offer an approach that serves to reduce the side effects suffered from chemo, radiation and surgical intervention based on the medical literature. There are ample literature reporting modalities that can support the body’s natural ability to resist cancer growth. We work to strengthen your immune system while guiding you in lifestyle habits that reduce cancer's ability to grow or recur. We are also happy to work with your oncologist in a united effort that offers you the greatest course of recovery.
Celiac Disease & Gluten Sensitivity
There is a distinct difference between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease but yes we are knowledgeable in the full spectrum of these disorders and are capable of differentiating sensitivity from allergy and the potential for autoimmune disease. We have significant experience and will help make this an easy process to heal the bowel and the immune system, and offer clear guidance to help you transition your diet with relative ease.
Children
We see pediatric patients for many different metabolic issues: ADD, ADHD, allergies, immune issues, diabetes, bowel complaints, rashes, behavioral issues, sleep issues and more.
Dietitian
Chelsea Dorsett, RD, LD offers a wealth of experience well beyond simple dietetics. She has worked as Dr. Huber’s right hand for many years dealing with complex health issues ranging from cancer, diabetes, and heart disease to gut issues like food sensitivity, celiac disease, and heartburn. Her experience in weight loss is well beyond simple dietary guidance and includes a full assessment of your lifestyle, sleep, stress, and even hormones. Chelsea can assist you in building a personalized nutritional plan to include different approaches such as Paleo, Ketogenic and elimination diets. In addition, she also builds nutrition plans for athletes in order to maximize health and performance. She is the director of our Virtuoso Program and manages our corporate health programs throughout the tri-state area.
Gluten Allergy or Sensitivity
A reaction to gluten is a big problem for many people. We are well versed in this issue and have developed successful programs. There is a difference between a true allergy, a sensitivity, and the worst possibility, celiac disease. We can help you sort through the confusion and put together a plan that works.
Heart Disease
Dr. Huber spent 20 years as an emergency medicine physician treating heart disease in the worst-case scenarios. He has dedicated great efforts to redefine how we recognize and treat this issue BEFORE it elevates to a tragic event. He has published articles in the medical literature detailing the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and outlined advanced strategies to derail its progression while promoting improved cardiac function. We go well beyond the “standard” cholesterol panel using cutting edge lab technology to uncover your true risk.
Kidney Stones
We address kidney stones without having to use medications such as hydrochlorothiazide, a drug that increases the risk for diabetes and kidney disease. We reduce recurrence rates and address dietary issues that contribute to stone formation so that you can take control.
Supplements
Dr. Huber teaches students at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy about the proper use and physiologic impact of pharmaceutical-grade nutritional therapies and supplements. He lectures to physicians through the fellowship program of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine about the proper use of supplements as detailed in the medical literature. Not all supplements are created equal, and so we carry only the finest made, pharmaceutical-grade, supplemental therapies available worldwide and carry our selected products because we see consistent results with their use. Our primary focus is your lifestyle and supplements are a secondary tool. The use of supplements either alone or in combination with drug therapy offers a significant advantage to patients seeking good health.
Thyroid Disease, Hashimoto's or Graves (hypo or hyperthyroid)
We feel very strongly that thyroid disorders often go unrecognized and yes we typically evaluate thyroid function to a depth not commonly experienced in traditional care. We take an aggressive stance as we realize that thyroid issues occur over a spectrum. It is not a black and white issue. Under-performance leads to increased risk for heart disease, intestinal problems, cognitive and mood decline as well as unhealthy weight gain. We prefer “optimal” function and view your clinical symptoms to be just as important as any lab test. A simple blood test does not tell the whole story.
Weight Loss
Dr. Huber has developed the most successful weight loss program available anywhere. Our success rate dwarfs numbers reported by the major nationally recognized weight loss programs, as detailed in Consumer Reports (Feb 2013). As experts in Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular disease, we understand the importance of weight as a contributing factor in heart disease, cancer risk, Alzheimer's risk, diabetes, arthritis, and all forms of degenerative disease. We get quick results with an accent toward changing your “mindset” for a long-term benefit. See our testimonials. We take the toughest cases and get amazing results.
